Current Release: v6.0, May 2003
This file describes the features that are unique to MailBounce Pro and MailBounce Pro PLUS, and provides instructions for upgrading to Pro and Pro PLUS.
Except where noted, any references to the features in the "Pro" version also include the "Pro PLUS" version, since their feature sets are nearly identical.
If your mailing list is small, you can probably keep it well maintained with MailBounce Lite (the freeware version). (Note, however, that Smart Mail Solutions, Inc., cannot provide technical support on the freeware version, nor do we accept new bounce formats from unregistered users.) If the mailing list(s) that you are managing is (are) relatively large, you should consider upgrading to the "Pro" version. By upgrading to MailBounce Pro, you will be able to benefit from the following features, available only in the Pro version:
- Process up to 2000 unique defunct addresses from a single bounce file (MailBounce Lite is limited to 400 unique addresses per pass).
- Recognize "soft" bounces, and optionally track hard and/or soft bounces and set thresholds at which repeatedly-bouncing addresses should be removed.
- "Fuzzy match" hard-to-match addresses. (This allows MailBounce to match addresses of the form "smith@mailhost.domain.com" to addresses in your mailing list such as "smith@domain.com" and/or "smith@mailhost.gateway.domain.com".) And, starting with v5.4, the MailBounce's fuzzy-matching capabilities have been extended significantly for even better address-matching performance. The new fuzzy matcher also includes a "fuzziness level" selector, allowing you to control the degree of fuzziness at which MailBounce will declare a match.
- Set "fuzzy" bounce-tracking thresholds, which allow you to optionally remove addresses that are bouncing "often," but not consistently.
- Specify addresses that are to be "ignored" by MailBounce -- i.e., addresses that will not be processed if they are encountered in the bounce file. (This is useful if there are specific addresses that you know to have intermittent problems, or that you simply do not want to have removed from the mailing list.)
- Essentially the opposite of the "Ignored" file (see above), MailBounce Pro allows you to specify addresses that are always to be removed from your mailing list whenever bounces are processed. This is a useful method for dealing with problem subscribers, problem ISPs, list archivers, etc., especially if your list is hosted on a list server that does not support such a feature. Even if your list server does support this feature, MailBounce's Global Remove file can make it much easier to ban addresses across a large number of mailing lists.
- Automatically processes "redirects" -- i.e., bounces in which a new address is provided for the subscriber. MailBounce Pro will unsubscribe the old address and subscribe the new one, completely automatically. (MailBounce Lite will only "alert" you to redirects.)
- Optionally process "unsubscribe" requests -- i.e., if someone sends an unsubscribe request to the list owner, you can simply add it into the bounce file, and MailBounce will automatically extract the user's address and remove that person from the mailing list. And, starting with v5.4, this feature has been extended to optionally include a broader range of unsubscribe-request syntax, including "remove me", "take me off your list", etc.
- Optionally update your subscriber files directly -- i.e., remove defunct addresses directly from the subscriber file. This is great for manually-managed lists -- and, coupled with automated unsubscribe processing (see above), this feature allows you to fully automate the unsubscription process for manually-managed mailing lists.
- Process multiple bounce files and/or multiple mailing lists on a single MailBounce run. (Applies to multi-list licenses only.)
- Simultaneously process multiple mailing lists with different posting rates without losing sync on tracked bounces ("incremental" bounce processing).
- Optionally "export" all unrecognized bounces to a separate file on each pass, so that you can see which bounces are not being recognized/processed by MailBounce. Also, you can configure MailBounce to ignore autoresponders, vacation messages, etc., when exporting non-bounce messages.
- Detect and (optionally) separately summarize information on bounces from sites that are blocking mail from your mailing list. Information is summarized in a concise report, showing the address of the user, and whether the block was put into effect by the user or the entire site (ISP).
- Redirect defunct addresses to Majordomo's "BOUNCE" list as an alternative to simply unsubscribing them. (Applies to Majordomo users only.)
- Optionally set addresses to "DIGEST", "INDEX", "NOMAIL", or "POSTPONE" mode instead of simply unsubscribing them. (Features depend upon the capability of the list server.)
In addition to the features described above, you will also receive e-mail-based tech support. You may also request Smart Mail Solutions, Inc., to review your configuration and recommend improvements to your Preferences settings to ensure optimal performance. And finally, registered software does not expire -- though we still recommend that you join the -ANNOUNCEMENT list for your platform, so you can stay abreast of upgrades.
In addition to the extra features,

Purchasing
You can purchase MailBounce Pro through Kagi Software in Berkeley, California. The SSL (secure) order page is available here:
When we receive your registration confirmation from Kagi, we'll send you an order form to fill out so we can complete your registration and issue your registration keys. If you do not receive the registration form within 48 hours of completing the purchase with Kagi, please contact Smart Mail Solutions so we may track down your order and get your registration keys out to you.
Once you receive your registration keys, just follow the simple instructions included with the keys to upgrade to MailBounce Pro. If you have any problems upgrading, feel free to contact us.
MailBounce Pro PLUS
To preclude use by spammers and unsolicited bulk e-mailers, MailBounce's arrays are fixed (limited) at compile time. MailBounce Pro can process up to 2000 unique bounce addresses on a single run; MailBounce Lite is limited to 400 unique addresses. Since spammers will typically generate much higher numbers of bounces, these array bounds limit the usefulness of MailBounce to the UCE community. However, they can also limit the usefulness of MailBounce to anyone who is managing a particularly large mailing list -- typically on the order of 50,000 subscribers or more.
If you find that you are routinely exceeding the array bounds (MailBounce will display TWO warnings whenever an array has filled up; these warning messages will be mimicked in both your Diagnostics File and in the Error Log), then you should contact Smart Mail Solutions, Inc., to discuss having us provide you with a Pro PLUS license. The Pro PLUS version allows you to specify the maximum array sizes in the Preferences file, which allows you to tailor your MailBounce to suit your needs.
Though order page has pricing options for the Pro PLUS version, we strongly recommend that you contact us before executing the purchase, as there may be a less expensive solution to your bounce problem.
Note: Smart Mail Solutions, Inc., reserves the right to decline any request for a Pro PLUS license if the requestor cannot prove that the application will be used to maintain a legitimate, voluntary-subscription mailing list. We at Smart Mail Solutions, Inc., believe very strongly in protecting the integrity of the Internet where commercial interests are concerned. Please see http://www.cauce.org/ for details on opt-in vs. opt-out e-mail.
If you have any questions or problems with the Pro or Pro PLUS versions of MailBounce, please feel free to contact us at support@web.mailbounce.biz.
