MailBounce Bounce AlertCurrent Release: v6.0, May 2003This "form letter" can be modified for your use when informing subscribers that they have been removed from the list for excessive mail bounces. You should copy the "removed" addresses from the BCC file (optionally generated by MailBounce) and place them into the BCC field of a mail message containing this form letter. Of course, you will have to adapt the form letter to your mailing list. If you are not using MailBounce's address-matching features, then it is very important that you set up filters (and/or other protective measures) in your mail system to prevent the bounces generated by this letter from being filed with the bounces from your mailing list, or else you will generate an infinite loop (albeit, a very slow one) of mail bounces. Note that this letter is merely an example, and applies to the settings that I have in my own Preferences file. Specifically, if you turn off the options to process unsubscribes and redirects, you can eliminate paragraphs 2 and 3.
Hello! You are receiving this message for one of three reasons: 1. Your address has been removed from the MAILLIST mailing list because your server has bounced your mail back to us -- this usually indicates that the account is no longer active, though sometimes it is the result of a local configuration error. If your account is still active, and you wish to remain a subscriber to the MAILLIST mailing list, you will have to re-subscribe by sending the following command to the list server at <SERVER_ADDRESS>: subscribe MAILLIST your_name ... where "your_name" is your real name (including spaces). I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. If you receive this message more than once, please let me know, so I can try to determine the cause of the problem. 2. You recently changed e-mail addresses, and your old server has redirected your subscription to your new address. In that case, you should receive this message at BOTH addresses, to let you know that the old one has been unsubscribed, and the new one has been subscribed. You do not need to take any action unless you had intended to unsubscribe -- in which case you will have to unsubscribe from your new address (sorry!). 3. You might also have been removed from the list via this method if you mistakenly sent your "unsubscribe" request to the wrong address. I place errant unsubs in the "mail bounces" pile, and process them with the bounces; having to read this message is your penalty for not following the proper unsubscription instructions. ;-)
