Submitting New Bounce Formats

Current Release: v6.0, May 2003

If you are a registered MailBounce Pro user, and you find a bounce format
that is not recognized by MailBounce, please submit the bounce to Smart Mail Solutions, Inc.
(be sure to include your site number with the submission). If the bounce is in a
machine-parsable format, it will be included in the next MailBounce upgrade.

There are some limitations and requirements, however:

Limitation on the types of bounce that can be processed

The bounce must contain the correct account name/user name of the bouncing address. Some bounces
do not provide this information; since MailBounce can only work with the information provided in
the bounce, absence of a username means that MailBounce will not be able to process that bounce.

Requirements for submitting new bounce formats

  1. You must supply the entire bounce, including all headers; do not remove any data from the
bounce (except for privacy or security reasons, of course). The message must not have been
modified in any manner. Note that we handle sensitive information for many of our customers,
including subscription lists in the tens to hundreds of thousands; rest assured that any
information sent to us is used solely for legitimate developmental/debugging purposes, and is
destroyed as soon as it is no longer needed.

  2. You must provide the ACTUAL subscriber's address (regardless of whether it exactly matches
the address shown in the bounce message). This is important because the address provided in the
bounce might have to be parsed or rearranged in some manner; it is critical that we know the
subscriber's address that corresponds to the bounce address. You should place the subscriber's
address immediately prior to the start of the bounce message.

  3. Ideally, turn off text wrap prior to sending the message. You can send the bounce as an
attachment if you cannot turn off text wrap (or if it's simply easier than turning it off).

  4. Turn off all text formatting; we need the bounces submitted as straight ASCII text.

So, for example, here is a sample message that you might submit; note that you will have to
supply the "ACTUAL ADDRESS" line:

That's all we need. Please let us know if you have any questions. Also, before submitting any
new bounces to us, be sure that MailBounce does not already recognize them.

Note that only registered users may submit new bounce formats. (This allows us to focus on the
registered-user base when upgrading the MailBounce Engine.) Please be sure to include your
site number with all communications to Smart Mail Solutions, Inc.
